Syndromic surveillance - overdose
Syndromic surveillance is near-real-time monitoring of indicators using automated data acquisition, processing and statistical alerts. Surveillance data can be used to monitor and detect changes in frequency and guide preventive measures in an attempt to reduce or eliminate morbidity and mortality.
Overdose is common among persons who use illicit opioids such as heroin, and among those who misuse medications prescribed for pain such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone, buprenorphine, and morphine. You can use syndromic surveillance to monitor overdose trends in near real-time and provide much-needed information to public health officials.
