Outbreak screening
An outbreak is defined as more cases of a disease than expected in a specific location over a specific time period. Often, these outbreaks are the result of either failures in infection control practices or contaminated equipment or medications. Suspicion must be maintained that an outbreak may be due to non-infectious causes such as poisoning or nutritional deficiencies.
Screening involves broad-scale testing of a population to see who may be infected. This type of testing can help identify infected individuals before they have a chance to spread the contagion to many others. And, if infected individuals quickly undergo a temporary quarantine, use of screening can decrease the likelihood of large outbreaks.
