BEFAST stroke scale

The BEFAST stroke scale helps you quickly identify a patient experiencing a stroke, as there is no time to waste in getting help for a stroke victim. A stroke is marked by the sudden onset of a droopy face on one side, weakness of the arm or leg on one side of the body, and the inability to speak. The BEFAST stroke scale includes the following additional characteristics.

  • B - Balance: A sudden loss of balance, such as leaning to one side or staggering when walking.

  • E - Eyes: A sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, double vision that doesn't go away when the patient blinks their eyes, or no side vision or vision above the midline.

The addition of balance and eyes to the exam helps identify more accurately where the stroke is occurring in the brain.
